“We did everything we possibly could”: Elton Sawyer defends NASCAR’s decisions amid late-race drama at Brickyard 400

After the conclusion of sunday’s brickyard 400, nascar became the subject of a backlash. Ryan preece spun out seconds before the white flag was waved as the race went into overtime. However, a caution flag was not raised until the white flag was waved and kyle larson was declared the race champion. Because of the long-awaited caution that was out, some fans accused nascar of favoring the hendrick motorsports driver. Nascar’s elton sawyer explained why it all went down the way it did after the race: “obviously we’d like it to go out naturally,” he said after the race. We’d already taken the white, but we’d just have to pass by there once more. It was sad, but it was the right call,” sawyer said. Sawyer referred to the aspect of safety when asked if the delayed response to the warning would’ve been the same earlier in the race. “when it comes to safety, we have cars that have spun out and are attempting to move,” sawyer said, “we’re going to do everything we can to remain green.”

Such scenarios, he said, are a “case by case,” with a lot of potentialities in the sense of a warning and ensuring safety at the same time.
