“They love to try to make you lift”: Ryan Blaney on Kyle Larson & Denny Hamlin’s racing styles

Ryan Blaney, the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion, recently shed light on the racing styles of his fierce competitors, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin. Known for their aggressive tactics, these two drivers have made a significant impact on Blaney’s racing experience this season. With all three drivers having multiple wins under their belts, the competition has been nothing short of thrilling.

In an in-depth interview with Jeff Gluck from The Athletic, Blaney delved into the nuances of racing against Larson and Hamlin. Over time, drivers develop distinct strategies and tendencies that become recognizable to their competitors. Blaney, driving the #12 Ford, pointed out that veteran racers like Hamlin and Larson are experts at putting others in difficult situations on the track. By aggressively shoving and pushing, they force drivers to lift off the gas, gaining an edge in the race. Blaney explained:

“Everyone has their tendencies when you’re racing them. Over time, you learn what to expect from these guys. Do they like to put you in tough spots and make you lift? Denny and Larson are great at that. They love to take up a lot of space on the track.”

He continued:

“When they’re on the inside, they tend to shove in and push you up the track, creating tight situations.”

Both Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin are renowned for their hard-nosed racing styles, which often involve pressuring others to back off. Despite these challenging tactics, Blaney admits he enjoys the fierce competition they bring to the track.

Blaney further revealed his mindset and preparations when racing against these formidable opponents. He acknowledged that while Hamlin and Larson’s tactics exploit his weak points, he relishes the challenge because it pushes him to be a better driver.

“I wouldn’t say I don’t enjoy it; I love racing with those guys because they are great racers. But if I restart next to them, I always keep in mind that they might take up a lot of space, and I need to be ready for that.”

As the 2024 season heats up, Blaney, Larson, and Hamlin are proving to be genuine contenders for the NASCAR Cup Series championship. All three drivers are currently in the top five of the points standings, setting the stage for a thrilling postseason. Fans and analysts alike are eagerly watching to see how these top-tier drivers will perform when it matters most.
