May of the 2024 season was supposed to be Larson’s month. But Mother Nature had other plans. As Charlotte Motor Speedway tickets sold out and NASCAR fans flocked to the Indy 500, one driver in particular was drawing attention. Kyle Larson was scheduled to become the fifth racer to attempt the 1,100-mile double duty until the weather improves.
Rain and lightning hit both Indianapolis and Charlotte. This caused a four-hour delay at Indy and ruined Larson’s Charlotte plans. “How long do you think they were behind (at Indy)?” he complained, “not only was Larson able to finish the Indy 500 properly, he couldn’t even start the Coca-Cola 600. There wasn’t.” Hours after his heartbreak, Kyle Larson continues to writhe in despair.
Kyle Larson deals with a “horrible” feeling
Preparations for the Memorial Day weekend spectacle were long and arduous. Sixteen months ago, Kyle Larson announced he would compete in two major races in two states, and the team sprang into action. Careful coordination took place between Hendrick Motorsports, NASCAR, Arrow McLaren, and many other companies. So there were many excited faces watching Kyle Larson sail to glory in the double.

Larson entered the fifth and prepared to pick up where Justin Allgaier left off. However, weather delays lasted two hours, forcing NASCAR to shut down at 11:30 p.m.
Kyle Larson watched in pain as Christopher Bell took victory in NASCAR’s crown jewel event. However, Allgayer did everything in his power to compensate for the absence of HMS Starr. Despite having no cup experience, he had an impressive run.
Larson’s double tried to save the Double
Justin Allgaier is a standout name in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. His last win came in the No. 7 car for JR Motorsports at Darlington. Allgaier’s 24 career wins ties him with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tommy Houston, and his 10th in the series. That means this top driver will also shine in a Cup car when he represents Kyle Larson in the Coca-Cola 600.
But Allgaier admitted he found the adjustment difficult. “It’s going to take some time to get used to the car. … This car is still very, very different [from the Xfinity Series cars]. We’re going to face challenges.” However, he overcame these challenges and placed his car in 13th place when the weather broke. Allgaier focused on his goals and kept Larson’s dreams at the forefront. “As important as The Double is, we are all here because of Kyle Larson. My only job when I was driving this car was to keep the car as far forward as possible with the fenders on and make sure Kyle had a great opportunity to come back and make his comeback. ” Although Larson was unable to complete many laps, it was a conscientious and noteworthy effort by Allgayer, HMS, and everyone else involved.
