I’m gonna keep digging until I can’t”: Justin Allgaier inspired by Denny Hamlin & Mark Martin in pursuit of a NASCAR championship

For over a dozen seasons, Justin Allgaier has been a steadfast competitor in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, delivering strong performances year after year. However, despite his best efforts and consistent results, he has yet to clinch a championship title. In a candid chat with Davey Segal, Allgaier opened up about his career, drawing parallels between his journey in the Xfinity Series and Denny Hamlin’s experiences in the Cup Series. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to keep racing for as long as he’s able to hit the track.

Allgaier’s journey in NASCAR began in 2005 when he debuted in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. By 2009, he had transitioned to a full-time role in the Xfinity Series with Penske Championship Racing. Since then, Allgaier has been a model of consistency, never finishing lower than seventh in the final driver standings. He achieved his best results with JR Motorsports, securing second place in the overall standings in both 2020 and 2023.

Reflecting on his career and the elusive nature of winning a championship, Allgaier shared his thoughts in an interview. He expressed a desire to win a championship not just for the title itself, but for the sense of closure and accomplishment it would bring. “The only reason I would want to win one is for that feeling of finally getting it right,” Allgaier said. He drew a parallel with Denny Hamlin, noting how despite Hamlin’s incredible success, the lack of a championship can still be a point of frustration. “Denny will go down as one of the best drivers of his generation, regardless,” Allgaier added, highlighting the respect he has for Hamlin’s career.

Allgaier’s passion for racing is evident in his determination to give his all every time he steps into the car. He believes that true racers always leave everything on the track, giving 100% effort every time. “No matter what happens, when you get behind the wheel of a race car for the last time, you want to know that you left it all out there,” he emphasized. Even if the outcome isn’t what he hopes for, Allgaier is committed to continuing his pursuit of excellence. “I’m going to keep digging until I can’t,” he affirmed.

In the 2024 season, Allgaier has already shown his competitive spirit, securing a victory at Darlington Raceway in May. This win guaranteed him a spot in the playoffs, a crucial step toward potentially winning his first Xfinity championship. Alongside this victory, he has accumulated five top-5 finishes and six top-10 finishes, showcasing his consistent performance and skill on the track.

Beyond his own achievements, Allgaier has deep respect for his team and the people who have supported him throughout his career. He holds his boss, Dale Earnhardt Jr., in high regard, praising his deep understanding of the sport. Allgaier compared Dale Jr.’s insight into racing to that of his legendary father, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. “I think Dale Jr. understands the racing world as well as, if not better than, anyone else,” Allgaier said. He appreciates how both Dale Jr. and his sister, Kelly Earnhardt, grasp the intricacies of NASCAR, making them invaluable leaders at JR Motorsports.

Allgaier also recounted a story that highlighted Dale Jr.’s integrity and character. When a deal with HScott Motorsports didn’t go as planned, Dale Jr. personally apologized to Allgaier, even though he wasn’t directly responsible. This gesture left a lasting impression on Allgaier, who admired Dale Jr.’s willingness to take accountability and show empathy.

As the season progresses, Justin Allgaier finds himself in a strong position, currently sitting second in the Xfinity Series standings with 705 points. His consistent performance and dedication have made him a formidable contender, and fans are eager to see if this could finally be the year he secures that long-awaited championship.

In summary, Justin Allgaier’s career in NASCAR has been marked by consistent performances and near-misses for a championship. His determination to keep competing, his admiration for his team, and his commitment to giving his best every race make him a respected figure in the sport. As he continues to chase his first Xfinity championship, Allgaier remains a testament to the perseverance and passion that define a true racer. Whether or not he clinches the title this season, his legacy as a dedicated and talented driver is already well-established.
