According to The Star, the Dallas Cowboys have been slow to add players in the free agent market, which appears to have been their strategy from the beginning. Several players have re-signed and some regulars have left, but one notable addition is the addition of former Chargers linebacker Eric Kendricks, who originally signed with the 49ers. That’s pretty much the Cowboys’ offseason so far. However, club vice-chairman Stephen Jones later said this was always his and owner Jerry Jones’ plan.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen in the next few weeks,” he said, “and I’m thinking about it in the context of how we approach this throughout the season.” As anyone can see, the first day of negotiations is intense and involves huge sums of money. However, things are starting to calm down. And we believe that we can be effective there and achieve good results. It would be beneficial for the Cowboys to strengthen their pass rush at this point. Bleacher Report suggests: Bolster an underutilized roster with free agent edge rusher Carl Lawson, who spent last season with the Jets.
Cowboys Could Land Larson on a $3 Million Contract? Analyst Alex Ballentine ranked Lawson as the top player on the list in an article titled “Bargain Contracts Cowboys Must Consider in 2024 NFL Free Agency,” arguing that the player is likely too talented to be available. Although Lawson may be gotten for a low price, the Cowboys only have about $8 million on the books and may need to make more room in the future (they’ll need money to sign draft picks). Ballentine offers Lawson, who returned from a ruptured Achilles in 2021 to have the best season of his career (and his first with the Jets) in 2022 with 7.0 sacks, a one-year, $3 million contract. Regarding the Cowboys’ need for a pass-rusher, Ballentine wrote: “The Cowboys could address the need by drafting a player, but there are veterans on the market who could contribute immediately.”
Carl Lawson is one that jumps out as a good fit. The 28-year-old is familiar with the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer. Zimmer’s teammate was a defensive end when the two played for the Cincinnati Bengals. After signing a free agent contract with the Jets in 2022, Lawson had his best season with the Jets, recording seven sacks and 24 quarterback hits. But he hasn’t contributed much to the Jets’ defense this season. “I’m a football player, not a cheerleader.” In fact, Lawson started 17 games, but played in just six games and was left out of the starting lineup.
Lawson was under pressure despite the final year of his three-year, $45 million contract as the Jets’ defense featured a strong, deep pass-rushing group that included Bryce Huff, Josh Johnson and Michael Clemons. I was exposed. That didn’t cheer him up. “I always wanted to help the Jets win. My goal was always to be the best version of myself for the team,” he told reporters about being benched last season. But at the end of the day, I’m a soccer player, not a cheerleader, so that’s how I feel. I want to play soccer, I want to create something, and I want to be useful.
