Four years after trading for Stefon Diggs, how long will the Bills keep him?

Four years ago today, the Bills traded for Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs. Will he still be on the team after four days? Mr. Diggs, whose social media history is extremely vague and deniably vague, posted on X that he was “ready for anything” and also posted the photo at the top of I changed it to a picture of myself waving his hand and saying goodbye. The relationship between Diggs and the Bills was strained at times.

Things boiled over last June when he was asked to leave the building on the first day of mandatory minicamp and the team initially gave the impression that he had left without permission. Things got back under control and remained that way for the 2023 season, but as the year went on, Diggs got the ball less and less, and his last 100-yard game was on October 15th. . He had 10 catches for 73 yards in two playoff games.

It’s gotten to the point where it probably doesn’t make sense for the Bills to continue the relationship. There may also be a point in Diggs wanting to move forward. When he decided to leave Minnesota (coincidentally or not, it was the same day Kirk Cousins received his contract extension), Diggs successfully induced a trade on Twitter. Could he do it now?

Probably not at this time. Probably after June 1st. His $18.5 million 2024 salary becomes fully guaranteed this weekend. He has a 2024 cap number of $27.854 million. Trading him before June 1 would trigger a cap charge of $31.096 million. The Bills could cut him before the salary becomes guaranteed. If they do it with a post-June 1 designation, the Bills would take a cap charge of $8.849 million this year and $22.247 million in 2025. But, obviously, they’d get nothing for him. The dilemma is clear. Will they fully guarantee his salary now and allow them to trade him later? Are they replacing him now? Who will take over his salary and forfeit his compensation? Either way, the Bills have to make a decision this weekend. Trade him before his salary is guaranteed, fire him before he’s guaranteed, leave him guaranteed and trade him after June 1st, or leave him guaranteed (possibly a restructuring to hit the cap). Either reduce the amount (accompanied by a change in the amount) and hold it for another year. No matter the outcome, we know Diggs is “ready for anything.”
