Former Browns QB Signs a $3m With NFC Favorite After Snub

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Joshua Dobbs has a new home once again. Dobbs signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, March 18th. According to ESPN, the reigning NFC champions have signed Dobbs to a one-year contract that will pay him $2.25 million and give him an additional $750,000 in playing time incentives. The 49ers will be Dobbs’ sixth team since 2022. Dobbs bounced back last season after being traded from the Browns to the Arizona Cardinals at the end of training camp. Before the trade, Dobbs was expected to be Deshaun Watson’s primary backup.

Dobbs started eight games against the Cardinals and went 1-7. He was then traded to the Minnesota Vikings before the trade deadline, going 2-2 as a starter. Dobbs started a total of 12 games, the majority of which were with the Vikings. He threw for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Dobbs is expected to be Brock Purdy’s backup with the 49ers next year.

Joshua Dobbs ‘Dismayed’ by Browns Trade

The Browns unexpectedly traded Dobbs last season. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the move led Dobbs in the wrong direction, and they didn’t seem interested in returning this offseason. “The Browns had talked about bringing Dobbs back, but he was disappointed in the surprise trade in August and didn’t want to come back,” Cabot said.

The Browns started five different quarterbacks last season, but Watson was sidelined twice with a shoulder injury. P.J. Walker, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Joe Flacco and Jeff Driskel all started for Cleveland last season. Browns general manager Andrew Berry declined to say whether he regrets dumping Dobbs. “I’m not really focused on that right now,” Berry said at a Nov. 15 press conference. “As the year progresses, there will be a time to reflect on everything, but that’s not the focus at the moment.”

The Browns made it to the postseason despite an uncertain quarterback situation. Flacco thrived, finishing 4-1 with Cleveland as a starter.

Browns Add Tyler Huntley to QB Roomtw

The Browns added significant talent to their quarterback staff this offseason. Cleveland signed former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston to replace Watson.

The team also recently signed former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley. For much of the offseason, it seemed like the Browns would be reunited with Flacco after his performance. Both sides expressed interest in returning it. However, the Browns did not offer Flacco a contract and chose Winston instead.

Winston has 22,104 passing yards, 141 touchdowns and 99 interceptions in his career. He had a 34-46 record as a starter and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2015. Winston spent the past four seasons with the Saints primarily as a backup player. Huntley is a surprise addition and will compete with Winston for the backup role. Huntley completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 1,957 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His career QB rating is 79.0.

Huntley is a dual threat who gained 509 yards and scored three more touchdowns. A player like Thompson Robinson, whom the Browns drafted in the fifth round a year ago. But it’s clear the team wants to give him more time to develop.
