Dak is facing tough time now
The Dallas Cowboys could be targeting a two-way quarterback as a potential backup for Dak Prescott. The Cowboys face a potential quarterback dilemma as the 2024 NFL Draft begins. Prescott is in the final year of his contract and there are no immediate talks about a new contract. While Dallas has been adamant that Prescott is in their future plans, the reality is that Prescott could leave the team in free agency next offseason. As Bleacher Report’s Maurice Morton writes, Florida State’s Jordan Travis is the quarterback the Cowboys should target to replace Prescott. “If the Cowboys can utilize Travis’ athleticism without limiting his playmaking opportunities, he could become a dynamic signal-caller with the team’s supporting cast,” Morton wrote. .
Jordan Travis Had Been a Heisman Trophy Favorite Prior to Injury
Travis, 23, was actually one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2023, leading the Seminoles to an 11-0 record and on the verge of a College Football Playoff berth. However, he suffered a season-ending broken leg against North Alabama while struggling to gain extra yards. Before his injury, Travis had thrown for 20 touchdowns plus seven touchdowns with just two interceptions for a 64.1 percent completion rate.
Travis is working towards a full recovery from his foot injury and expects to be fully recovered by spring training. Via Charian Williams of NBC Sports:
“At this point, I’m taking it every day,” Travis said. “I wake up every day and look at my shoes and I’m so grateful. It’s definitely been a journey. My family has helped me get through this. But yeah, it should be done by May. I think that’s my goal. May, June, everything is ready. ”
Why Cowboys Could Benefit From Drafting Jordan Travis
While the idea of selecting Travis may not be particularly exciting for Cowboys fans when considering potential replacements for Prescott, it’s a smart move as the risk is low and the reward is high. Travis is not expected to be selected until late in the draft. That means if the Cowboys select Travis somewhere between the fifth and seventh rounds, there will be no quarterback controversy at all, regardless of Prescott’s contract situation.
However, Travis could be poised to develop into a serviceable quarterback once he plays a full pro season and recovers from his foot injury. As Morton mentioned, Travis has been one of the best two-way quarterbacks in the league over the past two seasons. “That being said, the 23-year-old has looked like one of the best two-way signal callers in the country over the past two years, throwing for 5,970 yards, 44 touchdowns, and just seven touchdowns, while 593 yards rushing. had an interception and scored 14 touchdowns on that one route,” Morton wrote.
The Cowboys have two quarterbacks on the roster in Cooper Rush and Trey Lance. Rush is a valuable reserve and has a 5-1 overall record as a starter, but Dallas won’t be relying on him as their franchise quarterback once Prescott leaves. Lance is a possibility given his previous status as a No. 3 pick and the fact that Dallas gave up capital relief to acquire him. However, he is still largely unknown at this stage of his career, having started just four games. Signing Travis would cost the Cowboys absolutely nothing, while also giving them a potential replacement for Prescott.
