Brock Purdy finally respond to York 49er decision over his recent contract extension

Brock Purdy spoke highly of 49ers owner Jed York’s comments about the future. York said at last month’s NFL annual meeting that the 49ers are planning the quarterback’s next contract and could negotiate it for the first time next year. Purdy’s 2024 salary is set at $1.1 million, an absolute bargain for a starting signalman, but that won’t last long. “You know, the market has changed,” York said. “Whether I like it or not, that is the way the market is and we have to accept the reality of the world. “For me, the quarterback is the most important position, not just in football, but in all sports, and they should be paid a lot of money.”

Purdy first responded to the comments Sunday, telling Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman that it was “great” to hear that a new contract was on the horizon, but added, “I still have work to do. There are a lot of them,” he said.

“I have to win games for this organization, and I have to get better starting here in OTAs,” Purdy told Inman. “Everything will be fine, no matter what it takes. But I appreciate his kind words.”

Purdy is in line for a huge raise in 2025, as 12 quarterbacks in the NFL currently have contracts that average more than $40 million per year. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow is the league’s highest-paid player at $55 million per year. “That’s the market,” York said last month. “Brock will ask for something no one has ever asked for before.”

That’s fitting, since in just two years Purdy has accomplished something no one has ever done before: from being the last pick in the NFL Draft to the Super Bowl.

Brock Purdy on Brandon Aiyuk: I’ll always have his back and support him in whatever he does

49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason. San Francisco doesn’t appear to have any intention of signing Aiyuk, but it’s too early for anything to happen before the season, whether that means Aiyuk signs a new deal with the 49ers or goes elsewhere. There’s enough time. At youth football camp over the weekend, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy said he spoke with Aiyuk about the situation. “I just told him I’ll always have his back and support him in whatever he does,” Purdy said, via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. “I want the best for him. This is a business matter so I cannot comment beyond my pay grade. He and I discuss things and I listen to him. “At the end of the day, I’ll always be grateful for what he did for me and gave me the opportunity to throw the ball.”

Purdy and Aiyuk have shown undeniable chemistry over the past two seasons. In 2023, Aiyuk caught 75 passes for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. He then caught nine passes for 149 yards and one TD in San Francisco’s three postseason games. Aiyuk, the 25th pick in the 2020 draft, was named to the All-Pro second team for the first time last season.
