49ers trade up with Eagles, select OL Dominick Puni with 86th overall pick

After being demoted after the second round, the 49ers moved forward to acquire Dominic Puni from Kansas State.

The San Francisco 49ers selected offensive player Dominic Pant with the 84th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday. To accomplish this, SF needed to move up to the right position by giving the Philadelphia Eagles the No. 94 (third round) and No. 132 (fourth round) overall picks in this year’s draft. After missing out on an OL in the first two rounds, the 49ers made that mistake three times and moved up eight spots to take the player.

Dominic Puni, 24, played two seasons at Kansas and spent time beyond the line of scrimmage. He started 25 consecutive games, playing primarily at tackle and guard. Punt didn’t allow a single sack in that span (nearly 1,600 snaps).

He previously spent time at Central Missouri Division II. The 49ers have needed to sign an offensive lineman (or two) since the end of Super Bowl V. Puni is being added more now as the team envisions him as a swing player on the line.

He will mainly be considered an NFL guard however. The 49ers spend their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft (31st overall) on wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. Then, they traded back a spot to 64th overall to take cornerback Renardo Green. SF is still equipped with six draft picks on Saturday, filling three needs in the first three rounds.

49ers trade back with Chiefs, select CB Renardo Green with 64th overall pick

The 49ers have been known to make out of the box moves, doing so with a bit of creative to select Renardo Green.

The San Francisco 49ers selected the Florida State cornerback with the 64th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft Friday night. SF makes the pick after trading back from 63rd overall with the Kansas City Chiefs. To do so, SF exchanged a sixth-rounder (211th) for a fifth-rounder (173rd) this year to move back one spot.

After watching a run on offensive linemen go before their pick, the 49ers choose to add an impact member of the secondary in Green.

Renardo Green, 23, played five seasons at Florida State, spending time at outside cornerback, safety and nickel. He racked up 148 tackles, 22 pass break-ups, one interception and one forced fumble in 41 games played. He is well-versed in press coverage as well, spending 322 snaps over the last two seasons there (third most in the FBS). The Florida native finished with a 86.4 courage grade from Pro Football Focus, third amongst ACC CBs.

He posted a 4.49 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, with a 1.53 10-yard split. Green is known for his instincts and intangibles, playing like a dawg in the secondary.

“[The 49ers] fit me. They play like some savages. They play like some dawgs,” Renardo Green told the media shortly after being picked Friday.
