Ty Gibbs Reflects on His Father’s Legacy Ahead of His Chili Bowl Debut

The Chili Bowl Nationals is no ordinary racing event. Known as the “Super Bowl of Midget Racing,” it attracts top drivers from all corners of motorsports to compete on the legendary dirt oval at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This year, all eyes are on Ty Gibbs, the 22-year-old NASCAR driver making his much-anticipated debut. For Gibbs, this event is more than just a race—it’s a sentimental return to the roots of his racing journey, one deeply intertwined with cherished memories of his late father, Coy Gibbs.

Speaking ahead of the event, Gibbs opened up about how the Chili Bowl’s environment rekindles memories of his early days racing alongside his father. “I grew up around the Supercross world with my dad, and I really miss that,” he shared. “This kind of gives me the same feel. It’s fun being back in the dirt.” These reflections add an emotional dimension to his debut, as he honors his father’s influence on his career while facing off against some of the best drivers in the field.

With over 300 competitors vying for a spot in the prestigious 40-lap championship race, Gibbs is preparing for a tough challenge. The North Carolina native will race against seasoned midget car drivers, including defending champion Logan Seavey, Tanner Thorson, and Buddy Kofoid, as well as fellow NASCAR stars like Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson. Despite his limited experience in midget racing, Gibbs remains focused and determined to prove himself on the iconic dirt track.

The 2024 season was a turning point for Gibbs, as he made his first appearance in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs and achieved a career-high 15th-place finish in the driver standings. Now, with the restrictions on dirt racing lifted by Joe Gibbs Racing, he’s embracing this opportunity to compete at the Chili Bowl. “I’ve been working hard to prepare for this race,” he said. “It’s only my second midget race, but I’ve had a blast so far. There’s always room to improve, and I’m excited to keep pushing myself.”

Partnering with NASCAR’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at CB Industries, Gibbs is entering the Chili Bowl Nationals with a blend of optimism, determination, and a heartfelt connection to his past. As the event unfolds from January 13–18, fans will be watching closely to see if this young driver can channel his father’s legacy into a memorable performance on the dirt.
