Tony Stewart has long been regarded as one of the most accomplished racers, excelling in various forms of motorsports including USAC racing, IndyCar, and NASCAR. With numerous titles to his name, Stewart has solidified his status as a top competitor across the board. However, despite his impressive career achievements, he had never experienced fatherhood—until now. His wife, Leah Pruett, gave birth to their first child, a son named Dominic, just before the Pomona Nationals race day.
At 53 years old, becoming a father came later in Stewart’s life, but he didn’t mind. Unfortunately, not everyone took this development positively. Social media critics took to their platforms to comment on Stewart’s late entry into parenthood. Nevertheless, Stewart, nicknamed “Smoke,” is no stranger to public scrutiny and brushed off these online detractors with ease.
Stewart responded to the criticism in a candid manner during the Race Industry Week session, acknowledging the age-related concerns. “I think the only negative aspect for me is the age. I’m 53, and it’s not exactly the ideal time, but social media is what it is,” he stated. He pointed out that a small percentage of people on social media often share their opinions, some of which can be harsh. Stewart, however, has learned to handle this type of criticism throughout his career.
Reflecting on why he decided to pursue fatherhood, Stewart explained that his intense focus on racing 15-20 years ago wouldn’t have made him the best father. “Back then, with how deeply involved I was in motorsports, I’m not sure it would have been the right time to be a good dad. But with recent shifts in my career, I have more time now,” he said.
In addition to welcoming his new role as a father, Stewart is gearing up for the 2025 racing season. While it was uncertain whether Leah Pruett would return to driving the Top Fuel dragster after her pregnancy, Stewart confirmed that he would continue his commitment as the team leader in the NHRA Top Fuel category. Although Pruett plans to prioritize motherhood over racing for now, Stewart supports her decision and believes she’ll soon be ready to return to the track.
“I’m scheduled to drive in the Top Fuel car again next year. Leah has chosen to focus on being a mom this year. She just had Dominic over two weeks ago, but I’m confident that in two to three weeks, she’ll be eager to get back into the car. While I’m a bit reluctant to step into the role, I’m excited to drive again in 2025,” Stewart shared.
Stewart, who earned the Rookie of the Year award in his recent Top Fuel debut, has unfinished business and is determined to find success in the upcoming season.
