Tony Stewart is stepping away from NASCAR following the conclusion of Stewart-Haas Racing, but his journey in motorsports continues. The three-time Cup Series champion is now turning his attention to NHRA drag racing. He will once again fill in for his wife, Leah Pruett, during the upcoming season.
Stewart previously stepped into the Top Fuel car for Pruett last year and shared insights about her current decision to prioritize family life. “I’ll be back in the Top Fuel car next year,” Stewart revealed to Speed Sport. “Leah has decided she wants to focus on being a mom this first year. She’s just over two weeks out from giving birth to Dominic, and I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a few weeks, she’s ready to get back behind the wheel of a Top Fuel car.”
Earlier this month, Pruett and Stewart celebrated the arrival of their first child, Dominic. Stewart expressed his admiration for his wife’s seamless transition into motherhood. “She looks amazing—you’d never guess she just had a baby. Her strength and resilience are incredible. But for now, she’s embracing her role as a mom next year,” he added.
Stewart’s NHRA debut this season was highly successful, earning him the Rookie of the Year title in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Reflecting on this accomplishment, Stewart said, “It’s an incredible honor to receive this award. The NHRA has some of the best drivers, and it’s one of the most diverse motorsports disciplines I’ve ever experienced. I’ve truly enjoyed working with the series to help promote and grow the sport.”
Stewart’s decision to focus on drag racing aligns with the conclusion of Stewart-Haas Racing, which ended operations after over two decades in NASCAR. The team achieved remarkable success during its tenure, securing two Cup Series championships—both won by Stewart—and an Xfinity Series title in 2023, courtesy of Cole Custer.
As Stewart prepares for another NHRA season, all eyes will be on his performance as he represents his wife for a second year. His continued involvement in motorsports, even after leaving NASCAR, highlights his passion and dedication to the sport.
