Kurt Busch, the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion, has been navigating a journey of recovery and reflection since his career-altering crash during qualifying for the 2022 M&M’s Fan Appreciation 400 at Pocono Raceway. The incident on July 23, 2022, led to his medical disqualification and, ultimately, his retirement from full-time NASCAR racing in August 2023 due to persistent concussion symptoms.
Looking back on his career, Busch expressed gratitude for his time in NASCAR, stating, “As I transition out of the driver’s seat, I can’t help but feel incredibly blessed.” Alongside his brother Kyle, he is part of one of the most successful sibling duos in NASCAR history. However, as time passes, a return to oval racing appears less likely.
Despite this, Busch remains active in motorsports. He is teaming up with Travis Pastrana for the Race of Champions (RoC), marking his first major event since stepping away from NASCAR. For his fans, this is an encouraging sight, sparking hope that it could pave the way for his return to a Cup car.

Busch recently addressed the possibility of a NASCAR comeback, though it is not his primary focus. “It’s about getting back into any form of racing—whether it’s sports cars, rally, or even drag racing like I did before,” he told Speedcafe. He emphasized that his future in racing depends on both his physical condition and the enjoyment he finds in it. Reflecting on his career, he added, “I poured my heart and soul into it for 23 years, won a bunch, wrecked a bunch, and I feel fulfilled. Whether it ended there or if I get back in the car later on, who knows?”
With 34 Cup Series victories, a Daytona 500 win, and a championship title, Busch has already secured his place among NASCAR’s greats. While his NASCAR chapter may be complete, a one-off return could still be on the table.
Discussing his recovery, Busch shared that while the aftermath of his Pocono crash was initially difficult, he has made significant progress through physical therapy and medical care. “I still feel lingering effects, but it has calmed down,” he noted.
Although NASCAR ovals seem out of reach, Busch will reignite his competitive spirit at Sydney’s Accor Stadium for RoC. He will face stiff competition from drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Mick Schumacher, and Valtteri Bottas. Having come close to victory in the 2019 RoC, Busch is determined to chase the top spot this time in Australia.
