Trackhouse Racing, led by Justin Marks, has become a strong contender in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team has taken a unique path for growth, mainly through its Project 91 initiative. This program, launched in 2022, aims to bring in talented drivers from different racing backgrounds, including international drivers. Shane van Gisbergen (SVG) is a recent success story from this program, rising quickly to the Cup Series.
SVG’s success with Trackhouse Racing includes a historic win at the Chicago Street race, securing a full-time Xfinity Series ride for 2024, and a spot in the Cup Series for 2025. He will drive for Trackhouse’s third team, #88, made possible after the team purchased a third charter from the now-closed Stewart Haas Racing.
Even with this success, Justin Marks wants to keep Project 91 going. He’s excited about continuing the program and is discussing how to integrate it into the team’s new three-car Cup Series lineup for next year. Marks believes that there’s still a lot of interest from both drivers and sponsors in Project 91.
However, the team’s focus on SVG has left another driver, Zane Smith, in a difficult position. Initially seen as a rising star, Smith had to be loaned to Spire Motorsports due to limited spots at Trackhouse. Unfortunately, after the 2024 season, Trackhouse decided not to keep him, leaving him searching for a new opportunity. There’s hope for Smith, though.
Teams like 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports (FRM) are considering expanding their operations, which could provide Smith with a chance to stay in the Cup Series. FRM, for example, has already secured a third charter and added Noah Gragson to their lineup, making it a potential landing spot for Smith.
There are still many unknowns, but Smith might find a new team if other organizations are willing to invest in expanding their teams. The situation highlights the tough choices Trackhouse Racing had to make while growing and balancing its lineup. As the silly season continues, it will be interesting to see where Smith ends up and how Trackhouse Racing’s strategy plays out in the future.
