Chase Elliott isn’t typically associated with competing in non-NASCAR races compared to his Hendrick Motorsports teammates. Kyle Larson often ventures into off-season racing events, while Alex Bowman has also explored racing opportunities outside NASCAR. However, Elliott has largely stayed focused on NASCAR competitions.
This wasn’t always the case. Before joining HMS, Elliott made a name for himself in late-model stock car racing, excelling at historic short tracks across the U.S., including the Snowball Derby. Despite his notable success, including two wins at the Derby, Elliott won’t participate in this year’s 57th running at Five Flags Speedway. There’s no restriction from team owner Rick Hendrick, but Elliott’s history with non-NASCAR activities has left him cautious.
Elliott is understandably hesitant to risk a repeat of his challenging 2023 NASCAR season. Early in the season, he suffered a leg injury while snowboarding, sidelining him for six races. The timing of his absence created significant obstacles in his quest to secure a playoff spot, and he ultimately missed the playoffs for the first time in his career. Adding to the turmoil, Elliott faced a one-race suspension after a retaliatory move against Denny Hamlin during the Coca-Cola 600. These setbacks made the 2023 season one of the most difficult of his career, emphasizing the need for caution with off-track activities.
While Elliott won’t be racing at Five Flags Speedway, his legacy in the Snowball Derby remains notable. He first won the prestigious race in 2011, becoming the youngest driver to achieve the feat, and followed it up with another win in 2015 before committing full-time to NASCAR. The Snowball Derby continues to attract a mix of veteran and emerging drivers, maintaining its reputation as one of the most coveted events in late-model racing.
This year, over 50 drivers are set to compete in the 57th Snowball Derby, all vying for the coveted Tom Dawson Trophy. Among the standout contenders are Bubba Pollard, Chandler Smith, and Ty Majeski. Pollard, a seasoned late-model racer with over 100 wins, has yet to claim a Snowball Derby victory despite 16 attempts. Smith, returning to the Derby for the first time since his 2021 win, aims to make an impact as he navigates uncertainty in his NASCAR career. Majeski, the reigning Craftsman Truck Series champion, boasts two Derby wins and is considered a strong favorite to claim another victory.
