Denny Hamlin recently expressed his views on Bubba Wallace’s contract extension with 23XI Racing. Wallace, who was the first driver signed to the team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Hamlin, secured a multi-year contract extension. Since joining the team in 2021, Wallace has claimed two race victories and achieved 16 top-five finishes. While he made the playoffs in 2023, he fell short this season.
During a recent press conference, Hamlin was asked about his expectations for Wallace and the team in the upcoming season. He emphasized that making the playoffs each year is a key goal for the #23 team. Hamlin explained, “The #23 team needs to make the Playoffs every year. I think that is our expectation, and then make a deep run and finish in the top 10 in points. That is kind of our expectation of where we are at. Just getting in, it is hard for me to say that is the only expectation, but it is an expectation, given the standards we are giving ourselves.”
Hamlin acknowledged that while Wallace has improved, there is still room for growth. He pointed out that Wallace must continue to elevate his performance, particularly in light of his teammate Tyler Reddick’s success. Reddick not only won more races but also secured the regular-season championship this year, which has set a higher bar within the team.
Regarding the decision to offer Wallace a contract extension, Hamlin highlighted the driver’s determination to improve as a key factor. Hamlin explained that Wallace’s desire to grow and his willingness to accept help stood out during the decision-making process. This openness to improvement was an important trait that convinced the team leadership of Wallace’s potential for future success.
Hamlin also spoke about the development Wallace has undergone behind the scenes over the years with 23XI Racing. He praised Wallace’s progress, particularly in areas where he previously struggled, such as road courses. Hamlin said, “Certainly, we’ve seen from my standpoint more pace on road courses, more pace at tracks typically that he wasn’t as fast at, that he needed to be, so I think all of that is good. His feedback has gotten better. That is very, very important. As long as he continues on that trajectory, he will be fine.”
With Wallace’s future at 23XI Racing secured, it remains to be seen how he will perform for the remainder of the season. So far, he has managed five top-five finishes but has not yet secured a win. His last victory came two years ago at Kansas, and he will be eager to break that streak in the final eight races of the season. Hamlin’s comments suggest that the team has high hopes for Wallace’s continued development, and his performance in the coming races will be closely watched as he seeks to build on his previous achievements.
