PGA Tour Eyes NASCAR’s Commissioner Steve Phelps Amid Executive Shifts

Artie Kempner, a pivotal figure in NASCAR’s broadcasting journey, recently stepped away from the sport after decades of service with FOX. Having directed races for over 30 years, Kempner’s final assignment was at Talladega Superspeedway. While not retiring, he has moved to ESPN, where he will now direct Monday Night NFL games, including the Super Bowl in 2027. His departure marks a significant loss for NASCAR, especially from one of its most trusted media allies.

Despite this setback, NASCAR seemed secure with Steve Phelps recently promoted as its first modern commissioner. However, NASCAR now faces the possibility of losing another top executive. According to Sports Business Journal, the PGA Tour is considering Phelps for its CEO position. Adam Stern confirmed via social media that sources familiar with the matter have indicated Phelps is among the names under consideration.

This development is significant because Phelps has been instrumental in NASCAR’s resurgence. Since taking the reins in 2018, he has guided the sport through the pandemic, introduced the Next Gen car, restructured race schedules, and brokered a $7.7 billion media rights deal. He also helped steer the merger between NASCAR and ISC and struck a careful balance between tradition and modernization.

The PGA Tour’s executive search committee, led by Arthur Blank and featuring Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, has kept its process discreet. Phelps’ name emerging publicly highlights the value placed on his leadership across the sports industry.

Despite his recent promotion and achievements, Phelps remains a serious target for the PGA Tour. His departure would follow the exit of former NASCAR President Brent Dewar in 2018, marking a second major leadership loss in recent years.

Phelps has proven to be a powerful voice in NASCAR during changing times. He recently condemned hateful messages aimed at driver Katherine Legge, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in the sport. He also diplomatically handled the Denny Hamlin vs. NASCAR legal dispute while supporting 23XI Racing’s success.

As speculation continues, there’s no official word yet from either NASCAR or the PGA Tour. NASCAR fans and insiders will be hoping Phelps stays, as his leadership has been central to the sport’s growth and stability.
