NASCAR’s Katherine Legge Breaks Silence on Online Abuse

While NASCAR has long been a male-dominated sport, women have gradually made their mark, with Katherine Legge being the latest to qualify for and compete in races. Despite her extensive career in auto racing, which began in 2000, Legge’s recent return to NASCAR has sparked intense online backlash. After qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series for the first time in March, she became the target of abusive messages from a segment of fans, prompting her to speak out.

Legge, who had previously participated in various NASCAR events, has faced criticism and hostility, especially following her first two races of the year—both of which ended in DNFs (Did Not Finish). The negative reception from fans, many of whom were already skeptical of her presence, intensified after these performances. In a recent interview with CNN, Legge addressed the surge in online hate, describing the behavior as part of a growing trend of toxic online bullying.

She expressed shock at the vitriol she’s received, pointing out how social media allows people to say things they would never dare say in person. Legge believes this issue is especially pronounced for women in male-dominated sports, where they’re often viewed as outliers or accused of being hired for diversity optics rather than merit. She compared her experience to other women in NASCAR, such as Danica Patrick, who eventually gained significant fan support.

Legge emphasized the importance of calling out online harassment and standing against the notion that female athletes don’t belong. She highlighted how the ability to hide behind screens has emboldened fans to voice harmful opinions without consequence.
Despite the negativity, Legge remains undeterred. She’s developed resilience over her years in racing and chooses not to give attention to people whose opinions hold no real value to her. “It’s just noise,” she said, explaining that her focus remains on those who truly matter—her team, supporters, and loved ones.
Looking ahead, Legge is scheduled to race again in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 3. Determined and grounded, she continues to push forward, refusing to let the hate overshadow her efforts and achievements.
