Kyle Busch recently praised Michael Jordan, co-owner of 23XI Racing, for being an invaluable asset to the team. Busch highlighted that Jordan’s impressive career achievements have set a high standard for everyone involved with 23XI.
The team, co-founded by Denny Hamlin and Jordan in 2020, first fielded the #23 Toyota Camry driven by Bubba Wallace at the 2021 Daytona 500. Jordan’s connection to motorsports runs deep, as his father once worked on a Cup car for Hoss Ellington, a local businessman. After Jordan’s 1982 NCAA win, he even visited Charlotte Motor Speedway and met racing legend Richard Petty. Jordan’s illustrious basketball career includes six NBA titles, five NBA MVP awards, and 14 All-Star appearances, solidifying his status as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
Busch emphasized that Jordan’s influence at 23XI extends beyond the track. While he may not be involved in day-to-day operations, his legacy provides the team with a resource they can tap into for guidance. Busch explained, “They can ask him about handling tough moments or understanding his thought process. Having access to the GOAT’s mind is just phenomenal.” He added that Jordan’s reputation and accomplishments naturally push everyone at 23XI to perform at a higher level.
Before 23XI Racing’s formation, Hamlin met Jordan at a Charlotte Hornets game and was surprised to learn how passionate the billionaire was about NASCAR.
Busch also touched on his decision to sign with Richard Childress Racing (RCR) instead of 23XI. After spending 15 years at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), Busch left the team ahead of the 2023 season, seeking a long-term contract. Hamlin had offered him a short-term deal with 23XI Racing, but since Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick had already secured multi-year contracts, there wasn’t a long-term option for Busch. Ultimately, he chose the stability of a multi-year deal with RCR.
Speaking about the negotiations, Hamlin explained, “We did consider a short-term stint with Kyle, but he was looking for long-term stability, which we couldn’t offer at the time.”
Busch will continue driving for RCR through the 2025 season, though there is potential for him to return to teams like Hendrick Motorsports or JGR, or even explore new opportunities depending on future contract amendments.
