After NASCAR rejected 65-year-old Mike Wallace’s attempt at a comeback, the team behind the effort has undergone a major transformation. Formerly known as MBM Motorsports, the team, owned by Carl Long, has rebranded itself as Garage 66. The name change represents a streamlined approach, focusing on quality over quantity with fewer personnel and a single car entry for most races. This shift comes on the heels of NASCAR’s decision to bar Wallace from competing in the 2025 Daytona 500, citing his extended absence from the Cup Series since 2015 and his last NASCAR event in 2020.
In a surprising turn, Garage 66 has tapped Garrett Smithley to drive their car at the pre-season Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium on February 2. Smithley, 32, brings experience with 76 Cup Series starts and 180 Xfinity Series races, including several with Long’s organization. While this debut won’t be at the Daytona 500, it marks a fresh chapter for the team under its new identity.

Smithley expressed excitement about the reunion and the opportunity to compete at the historic Bowman Gray, a notoriously challenging quarter-mile track nicknamed “The Madhouse.” He noted that working with Long has always been a good experience, and he’s optimistic about what they can achieve together in 2025.
Long shared similar enthusiasm, highlighting Smithley’s ability to protect equipment and perform well on short tracks. He also emphasized the importance of starting the season on a high note, despite the team’s limited resources compared to higher-budget competitors. The focus for Garage 66 is on building solid performances, with Long confident in Smithley’s skills to navigate the intense heat races at Bowman Gray, where Cup cars haven’t competed since 1971.
The rebranding to Garage 66 symbolizes a leaner, more efficient operation for Long’s team. The name and structure reflect their ambition to deliver competitive results despite downsizing. While the Daytona 500 lineup remains uncertain for the team, Smithley’s return provides momentum and a chance to make a statement in the Clash.
With no championship points at stake, the Bowman Gray event offers an exciting showcase for drivers and teams alike. As the new season approaches, Garage 66’s bold changes and Smithley’s return could signal a fresh start and renewed potential.
