Kaulig Racing announced on Monday that Shane van Gisbergen will drive the #13 WeatherTech Chevrolet for the upcoming Charlotte Roval race next Sunday. The announcement was made through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) by the Welcome-based team.
This weekend’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway marks the final event in NASCAR’s Round of 12. The race will determine which four drivers will be eliminated from playoff contention. However, Kaulig Racing and van Gisbergen are not involved in the playoffs, as neither qualified for this year’s postseason.
Typically, van Gisbergen drives the #16 Chevrolet in his part-time Cup Series role with Kaulig Racing. However, for this event, Kaulig Racing decided to switch things up. AJ Allmendinger will take over the #16 car, while van Gisbergen will pilot the #13 Chevrolet for the road course race.
Kaulig Racing shared their excitement in a post on X:
“Another road course. Another Kaulig entry. Another trophy hunt!! SVG will pilot the No. 13 @WeatherTech Chevy this weekend at The ROVAL!”
According to Joseph Srigley of Sports Illustrated, Travis Mack, the usual crew chief for the #16 car, will work with van Gisbergen for the #13 entry, while Andrew Dickeson will team up with Allmendinger for the #16.
Both van Gisbergen and Allmendinger competed in last weekend’s race at Talladega, with van Gisbergen finishing 15th in the #16 car and Allmendinger taking 28th in the #13.
This race at Charlotte also sees WeatherTech once again supporting van Gisbergen. A day prior to Kaulig Racing’s announcement, WeatherTech agreed to sponsor van Gisbergen for the entire 2024 season as part of his new full-time ride with Trackhouse Racing. The deal will see WeatherTech branding on van Gisbergen’s #88 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for 36 races next year.
Van Gisbergen secured his full-time Cup Series seat with Trackhouse Racing earlier this year. In addition to sponsoring van Gisbergen, WeatherTech will also support Trackhouse Racing’s Connor Zilisch in the Xfinity Series. Zilisch will drive the #88 car in that series next season.
