Kasey Kahne 3 Bold Statement following His Shocking Comeback at Rockingham Left Fans Surprised

After nearly two decades of full-time NASCAR racing, Kasey Kahne stepped away in 2018 due to severe dehydration, which forced him to miss the final 11 races of the season with Leavine Family Racing. Since then, it took him a while to reconnect with the sport. But when the 2025 NASCAR schedule was released, one race at Rockingham Speedway stood out to him.

In the early hours of January 10, Kahne texted Keith Rodden, Richard Childress Racing’s (RCR) VP of Competition, expressing interest in NASCAR’s return to Rockingham. The two, former teammates for over 15 years, quickly moved the conversation to a call. Rodden then reached out to Danny Lawrence, VP of Alliance Operations, and soon after, team owner Richard Childress gave the green light. That’s how Kahne landed the one-race deal to drive RCR’s No. 33 Chevrolet.

Kahne was also invited to an organizational test at Rockingham on January 28, where he quickly found his rhythm despite the repaved surface. Reflecting on the session, Kahne said it felt like no time had passed since his last NASCAR race.

Rockingham holds sentimental value for Kahne. He debuted there in the Xfinity Series in 2002, finished second in only his second Cup Series start in 2004, and won a Truck Series race there in 2012. The track’s unique characteristics—its size, banking, and layout—are what drew him back.

In preparation for the North Carolina Education Lottery 250, Kahne leaned on RCR’s full-time drivers Austin Hill and Jesse Love, and made use of the team’s advanced simulator. He tested in a chassis used by Kyle Busch at Charlotte last year, and the team is bringing a brand-new car to the race, with experienced crew chief Andy Street leading the charge.

Rodden emphasized that Kahne is being given top-tier equipment and support. The goal is to run up front and contend for the win. Kahne echoed that sentiment, saying he’s not returning just for fun—he’s here to compete and possibly win.

Though he’s unsure about racing beyond Rockingham, Kahne hasn’t ruled out future starts. For now, he’s focused on giving his best effort and seeing where it leads.
