Justin Allgaier secures top-10 for JR Motorsports in team’s first Cup

Justin Allgaier delivered a strong performance for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in JR Motorsports’ first NASCAR Cup Series race, securing a ninth-place finish in the 2025 Daytona 500.

Allgaier had to race his way into the event during the Duel qualifying race, where he outpaced JJ Yeley to earn a spot in the main race. His victory in the Duel led to an emotional moment as Earnhardt Jr. embraced him after the No. 40 Traveller Whiskey Chevrolet officially made the field for the prestigious event.

Once the green flag dropped on the Daytona 500, Allgaier wasted no time making up ground. With Earnhardt Jr. and sponsor Chris Stapleton watching, he gained 20 positions in the opening stage and finished 14th in that segment. However, his race took a turn during a pit stop when his crew jumped over the wall too soon, forcing him to restart at the back of the field.

The setback placed Allgaier in a precarious position when leader Joey Logano had issues, causing a chain reaction that resulted in an incident involving Ross Chastain, Helio Castroneves, and others. Allgaier’s car sustained damage, but the team managed to make repairs, allowing him to climb as high as eighth later in the race. Unfortunately, his momentum stalled when the line he was running in lost speed, shuffling him back.

In the final stage, with just four laps remaining, Allgaier got caught in another multi-car wreck. Despite further damage, his team got the No. 40 back on track for the last restart. Avoiding the chaos in the closing moments, Allgaier managed to cross the finish line in ninth, giving JR Motorsports a top-10 finish in its Cup Series debut.

Reflecting on the race, Allgaier acknowledged the challenges but was pleased with the outcome. “We experienced everything—DVP, pit stops, and the unpredictability of picking lines. There was some uncertainty racing with guys I don’t normally run with, but overall, it was a solid night. Avoiding that last wreck was a highlight. I assumed the caution was out, but realizing we were still racing to the line and finishing in the top ten was a great moment,” he said.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared his excitement about the team’s debut, hinting at potential future expansion. According to a report from Noah Lewis, Earnhardt Jr. is exploring partnerships with potential investors who may be interested in purchasing a charter for JR Motorsports.
