The 2023 season was a challenging one for Gibbs, as he battled with Bubba Wallace for a tricky playoff spot. However, this year has been a different story. While Gibbs has yet to secure a win in the Cup Series, his consistent performance has placed him tenth in the standings, securing enough points to be comfortably locked into the playoffs. During a live press conference, Gibbs shared a valuable lesson he learned: “I learned that it’s definitely nice to be locked in before Daytona, that’s for sure. I still have a lot to learn now, and I’m sure for the rest of my career. But the experience was the most important.”
Gibbs’ seven-word lesson about the importance of being “locked in before Daytona” has certainly paid off for him. His performance in the Michigan race was a testament to his potential. Despite the rain-delayed race, he led 17 of 54 laps and finished third in his Joe Gibbs Racing #54 car. This impressive result earned him 21 points and moved him 39 points above the playoff cutoff.
The young driver attributes much of his success to his team. He believes that the collective effort of his crew has been crucial in helping him reach this level. Gibbs is also enjoying the journey, learning from each experience and striving for improvement. “I think my team’s been doing well. My crew chief has had some years in the Cup Series. So, we’re all learning and mostly, I’m learning and enjoying it,” Gibbs said, highlighting his gratitude for his team’s support.
Adjusting to the rigorous schedule of the Cup Series has been a challenge for Gibbs. He admits that getting used to the weekly routine was more demanding than the physical exertion of racing itself. “Getting used to how the weeks are and how everything is at the top level—it just takes some time to get used to, and that’s what I think I’ve been doing,” he explained.
