Kyle Busch, a NASCAR Cup Series veteran, has addressed speculation about his retirement as he nears his 40th birthday on May 2. His last victory came in June 2023 at Gateway, and his recent struggles, along with Richard Childress Racing’s (RCR) inconsistent performances, have fueled discussions about his future in the sport. Busch still has a year left on his contract with RCR, adding to the uncertainty.
When asked about his future plans on Sunday, Busch told CBS Sports’ Steven Taranto that retirement has been on his mind since three years ago. He admitted that such thoughts are part of a daily reflection but emphasized his commitment to RCR. He remains focused on helping the team improve and returning to Victory Lane, stating that as long as he enjoys racing and working with his team, he will continue pushing forward.

Discussing RCR’s struggles, Busch stressed the importance of working smarter rather than just putting in more effort. He acknowledged the team’s dedication and long hours but suggested that a more strategic approach is needed to achieve better results.
According to Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic, Busch still has the ability to win races, but RCR needs to provide him with more competitive cars. He pointed out that Busch himself admitted before the weekend that his team was not in contention, highlighting RCR’s current limitations.
Bianchi compared RCR to top-tier teams like Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports, noting that RCR lacks the consistent competitiveness seen in those organizations. While Busch has the talent to capitalize on opportunities, such as his near wins at Darlington and Atlanta last year, the team must focus on increasing speed in their cars to maximize his potential.
Despite the challenges, Busch managed a 17th-place finish in the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville on Sunday.
