Denny Hamlin recently shared his perspective on Bubba Wallace’s contract extension with 23XI Racing, a team co-owned by Hamlin himself and basketball legend Michael Jordan. Wallace, who drives the #23 car, has been part of the team since its inception and recently committed to a multi-year extension. Since joining the team in 2021, Wallace has notched two wins and achieved 16 top-five finishes. While he did manage to make the playoffs in 2023, this season hasn’t been as successful, with Wallace missing out on a playoff spot.
When asked about his expectations for Wallace and the team moving forward, Hamlin was clear in his goals. He emphasized that qualifying for the playoffs is a minimum expectation for the #23 team. But it doesn’t stop there—Hamlin expects Wallace to not only make it to the playoffs but to also advance deep into the competition and finish in the top 10 overall. He explained that these expectations reflect the high standards they’ve set for themselves, adding that Wallace is aware he needs to keep improving to meet these goals. Hamlin acknowledged that Wallace has indeed gotten better over time but stressed that the driver must continue to push his limits.
Despite Wallace’s progress, he has been outshone by his teammate, Tyler Reddick, who has had an impressive season, including multiple wins and securing the regular season championship. This comparison underscores the growing expectations on Wallace, particularly within a competitive team like 23XI Racing. Still, Hamlin made it clear that Wallace’s drive to improve played a significant role in the decision to extend his contract. The team leadership believes in his potential, and Wallace’s willingness to grow has been a key factor in solidifying his future with 23XI Racing.
In the same media appearance ahead of the race in Bristol, Hamlin was asked to elaborate on Wallace’s personal development behind the scenes. Hamlin highlighted the progress Wallace has made over the years, not just on the racetrack but also in his attitude and approach to racing. He praised Wallace’s increasing openness to feedback and his ability to seek help when necessary—qualities that have contributed to his overall improvement.
Hamlin was particularly pleased with Wallace’s enhanced performance on road courses and at tracks where he previously struggled. According to Hamlin, Wallace’s feedback has also improved significantly, a critical skill for any driver looking to compete at the highest level. As long as Wallace continues on this upward trajectory, Hamlin believes he will be fine.
Looking ahead, it’ll be interesting to see how Wallace performs now that his future with 23XI Racing is secure. While he has secured five top-five finishes so far this season, he has yet to win a race. His last victory came two years ago at Kansas, and with eight races remaining in the season, Wallace will be eager to break his winless streak.
