Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks has reassured fans that Project91 is far from over. The groundbreaking initiative, which successfully introduced international drivers to the NASCAR circuit, is set to make its return after overcoming some temporary logistical challenges.
Launched in May 2022, Project91 was designed to expand NASCAR’s global reach by bringing in elite drivers from various motorsport disciplines for short-term stints in the Cup Series. Notable participants included Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen and Supercars star Shane Van Gisbergen. Van Gisbergen made waves in 2023 by winning his Cup Series debut on the Streets of Chicago, highlighting the program’s potential.
The success of Project91 sparked widespread international interest in NASCAR, inspiring other teams like Richard Childress Racing and 23XI Racing to explore similar strategies. Marks underscored the initiative’s impact, stating:
“Project91 is certainly not dead,” Marks affirmed. “I’d expect to see it back on the racetrack sooner rather than later. It’s exciting to see how the program evolved from a one-off concept into something with real influence in the sport. Shane Van Gisbergen is a testament to that, moving to the U.S. and committing fully to being a Cup driver. His journey has resonated with fans and brought incredible energy to the series.”
Marks also shared that interest in Project91 remains high. “We’re receiving calls from some of the world’s top drivers eager to participate. That level of enthusiasm is thrilling. The only reason Project91 wasn’t active in 2024 was because we had so much on our plate, including managing the third car for SVG and supporting his transition with Kaulig Racing. Now that we’re refocusing on our three full-time cars for next year, Project91 can return stronger.”
Looking ahead, Trackhouse Racing is gearing up for a three-car operation in 2025, featuring Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez, and Shane Van Gisbergen. Van Gisbergen’s full-time move to the Cup Series, piloting the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro, reflects the lasting success of Project91’s vision.
