Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has announced that Tyler Allen will take on the role of crew chief for Ty Gibbs and the No. 54 team in the NASCAR Cup Series starting in 2025. Allen, who led JGR’s No. 20 NASCAR Xfinity Series team to eight wins and a second-place finish in the 2024 owner’s championship, is stepping into the Cup Series role following an impressive debut season as a crew chief.
Before becoming a crew chief, Allen spent seven years as a race engineer under Adam Stevens, working with drivers Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell. During this time, the Bellevue, Washington native contributed to the 2019 Cup Series championship and played a key role in five Championship 4 appearances (2017-2019 with Busch, 2022-2023 with Bell).
In 2024, Allen’s leadership produced eight Xfinity Series victories across multiple drivers, along with 17 top-five finishes and 22 top-10s. Among the highlights was earning the pole position at Charlotte Motor Speedway with Ty Gibbs, leading 27 laps, and securing a ninth-place finish.
“It’s an honor to be named crew chief for Ty Gibbs and the No. 54 team as we prepare for the 2025 season,” Allen said. “This opportunity has been a dream of mine since I joined JGR 10 years ago. I’m grateful for the support and guidance I’ve received from my mentors and teammates along the way. Ty has shown tremendous speed and potential, and I’m excited to help build on his experience to get the 54 car into Victory Lane.”
Allen will oversee Gibbs’ third season in the Cup Series. Gibbs made significant strides in his second year, earning eight top-five finishes, 12 top-10s, two poles, 417 laps led, and a playoff berth.
In related news, JGR announced that Chris Gabehart will step into the role of competition director, while Chris Gayle will become crew chief for Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 team starting in 2025.
Jason Ratcliff Returns to Xfinity Series as Crew Chief for Taylor Gray
With Allen’s move to the Cup Series, veteran crew chief Jason Ratcliff will return to the pit box to lead Taylor Gray and the No. 54 Xfinity Series team in 2025. Ratcliff, who stepped away from the box in 2023 to serve as JGR’s Team/Driver Coordinator for the Xfinity and ARCA Menards Series teams, is eager to return to trackside leadership.
“I’m thrilled to join Taylor and the 54 team for the upcoming season,” Ratcliff said. “After a year away from the track, I’m excited to be back on the pit box every weekend. Taylor has incredible talent and determination, and I’m committed to helping him achieve success.”
Ratcliff, a seasoned veteran with 24 years of experience, boasts 72 national touring wins, including the 2009 Xfinity Series championship with Kyle Busch. His career includes 801 starts as a crew chief, with 15 Cup Series victories, 57 Xfinity Series wins (the most in series history), 209 top-fives, 406 top-10s, and 49 poles.
“We take great pride in the depth of talent within our Xfinity Series program,” said JGR owner Joe Gibbs. “Tyler Allen’s success under Adam Stevens in the Cup Series and his exceptional leadership in the Xfinity Series last year have prepared him to lead Ty Gibbs in the No. 54 car. We’re equally excited to welcome Jason Ratcliff back to the pit box to guide Taylor Gray. Jason’s contributions to JGR over the years have been invaluable.”
