NFL reveals Week 7 fines: 49ers’ Trent Williams hit with nearly $12K penalty for ejection-worthy punch

The NFL is wrapping up Week 7 with a significant round of fines, headlined by the near $12,000 penalty issued to San Francisco 49ers’ Trent Williams. Williams was slapped with an $11,817 fine for unnecessary roughness after a punch he threw landed him an ejection.

The incident occurred when Williams retaliated against Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook, hitting Cook on the side of his helmet after being struck while on the ground. Notably, Cook also faced repercussions, with a fine of $8,442.64 for his role in the altercation.

This game wasn’t short on disciplinary actions, as 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore were also fined for unnecessary roughness. Lenoir received an $11,817 penalty, while Moore’s fine amounted to $9,356.83. But the wave of fines didn’t stop there; several players across the league were hit with costly penalties for various offenses, from facemask violations to roughing the passer.

One notable instance includes Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was fined $11,255 after grabbing Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith’s facemask during Tampa Bay’s loss. Additional Buccaneers players faced penalties too, with linebacker K.J. Britt and defensive players Earnest Brown IV, Jordan Whitehead, and Antoine Winfield Jr. each fined for rough tackles and low blocks.

Roquan Smith’s name resurfaced, this time for a controversial hip-drop tackle that ended the season for Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin. The NFL fined Smith $16,883, underscoring its crackdown on this type of injury-causing play. Ravens defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike joined Smith on the fines list, penalized for roughing the passer in a hit on the quarterback.

Jets linebacker Quincy Williams received the largest fine from Week 7, amounting to $45,020 for leading with his helmet on a rough tackle. His teammate Leonard Taylor III was also penalized, while fines extended to Buffalo Bills’ Taron Johnson for a crown-of-helmet hit on Titans’ Tony Pollard.

In Miami’s game against the Colts, multiple fines emerged, including a notable $17,445 penalty for Dolphins’ Alec Ingold for a low block. Broncos players Malcolm Roach and Levi Wallace also faced disciplinary actions in their win over the Saints.

Other players from the Packers, Texans, Giants, and Eagles were fined for offenses ranging from leg whips to roughing the kicker, making Week 7 a costly round for many teams as the league enforces its strict regulations.
