The NBA has put the regular season on hold for 24 hours—no games today! This break is intended to focus attention on Election Day, encouraging all eligible citizens to vote. Although the NBA is taking a day off, the league is still active in spreading its message through a collaboration with various social media influencers.
To raise awareness and motivate people to vote, the NBA sent out customized Voting Essentials kits to multiple influencers. These influencers unboxed their kits on Instagram, sharing the message “Our voice matters” with their followers. Among them was Liz Beecroft-Ridgway, a psychotherapist and founder of MENTL.SESH. So, what was inside the kit?
In a reel shared by Liz, she revealed a countdown timer showing the time left to vote, cards with voting eligibility criteria, and a voter checklist to simplify the process. The kit also included goodies like a pen, a water bottle, and a cap and T-shirt emblazoned with “VOTE,” similar to those worn by NBA players before games.
Alongside Liz, other influencers like Tor’i Brooks, Achieng Agutu, Haley Kalil, Mari Takahashi, and more received similar packages and shared them with their followers. Brittney Elena also joined in to help people “Get in the Game.” This initiative by Adam Silver, timed around the Presidential Elections, encouraged people to get out and vote.
By canceling games today, the NBA ensured that Election Day remains in the spotlight. Recognizing the importance of high voter turnout, Adam Silver and NBPA President CJ McCollum collaborated to give players, team staff, and fans a break to vote.
“It was important,” CJ said in a recent interview. “The NBPA talked about this, and I was vocal about it. It’s crucial for us to use our platform to share information and ensure people have the time to vote.”
It’s great to see the NBA supporting such an important cause. And don’t worry—the games will be back tomorrow.
