NASCAR races at Homestead receive big update amid massive fire in 2025

A fast-moving wildfire has closed the only two roads leading in and out of the Florida Keys, spread to Homestead, and forced the closure of the Florida City exit from Florida’s Turnpike. Officials reported the fire has now burned over 22,000 acres—ten times larger than two days prior. Both the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road were shut down Thursday in both directions. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office also blocked access to Florida City at the intersection of U.S. 1 and East Palm Drive.

Despite the fire’s rapid growth due to dry air and strong winds, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue stated there is no immediate threat to homes or businesses. However, they warned that shifting winds could increase smoky conditions. By Thursday evening, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reopened the 18 Mile Stretch but cautioned that the situation could change depending on weather and fire activity.

Aerial assessments by the Florida Forest Service revealed the blaze had expanded significantly. Initially, the fire was reported to be burning 2,000 acres on Tuesday with 20% containment. By Thursday, it had grown to 22,000 acres, with only 22% contained. Firefighters from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Park Service were using helicopters to drop water on the flames near Southwest 344th Street and Southwest 117th Avenue in Homestead. Thick smoke filled the air, and ash rained down as crews worked to control the fire.

Drivers heading to the Keys found themselves stranded, filling parking lots of nearby businesses like Starbucks and Cracker Barrel. Along East Palm Drive, smoke drifted near residential areas like the Gardens II neighborhood and a Publix store. Among those stuck were the Penellas and Follett families, who were trying to reach Key Largo for a wedding. With essential supplies delayed, they anxiously awaited news of the road reopening.

DALE JR AND CARL EDWARDS BIG PLAN

The fire, which began over a week ago, intensified under dry, windy conditions. The National Weather Service issued a red-flag warning for South Florida, including Miami-Dade and neighboring counties, until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Despite the disruptions, the city of Homestead confirmed the NASCAR Cup Series at Homestead-Miami Speedway will proceed as scheduled. While the fires caused brief power outages and possible damage to communication towers, repair crews are working to restore service.
