Lions Elevate James Mitchell, Sign Ezekiel Turner to Active Roster

The Detroit Lions are making key roster adjustments ahead of their Week 11 clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tight end James Mitchell has been elevated from the practice squad, marking his season debut, while linebacker Ezekiel Turner has been signed to the active roster.

These moves come as the Lions look to fill critical gaps caused by injuries, including the absence of standout tight end Sam LaPorta, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

For Mitchell, this is a significant opportunity. A 2022 fifth-round pick, he faced setbacks after being released at the end of training camp but fought his way back onto the practice squad. Now, with LaPorta unavailable, Mitchell is stepping into the spotlight alongside Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra to support the team’s offense.

Mitchell’s NFL journey so far includes 13 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown over two seasons. While those numbers may not stand out, his coaches have taken note of his growth and development behind the scenes.

Passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Tanner Engstrand spoke highly of Mitchell’s progress, particularly during practice sessions. “He’s done a really nice job,” Engstrand said, sharing insights into Mitchell’s work ethic and determination.

He explained how Mitchell has been sharpening his skills while competing against the Lions’ defense as part of the scout team. A recent practice highlight showcased Mitchell’s ability to execute traditional plays with precision and strength, giving the coaching staff confidence in his readiness to step up when needed.

This elevation isn’t just about filling a roster spot—it’s about trust and opportunity. The Lions believe in Mitchell’s ability to rise to the occasion and make an impact in Sunday’s game. With Detroit looking to maintain momentum, Mitchell’s performance could play a crucial role, making him a player to watch against the Jaguars. Fans are eager to see how he handles the pressure and whether he can turn this chance into a breakout moment.

For Mitchell, it’s “next man up,” but this could be the start of something much bigger. With his determination and the faith of his team behind him, Sunday’s game is shaping up to be a pivotal point in his career. All eyes are on him—can he deliver? Stay tuned to find out!
