As the NBA season nears its midpoint, the Los Angeles Lakers are beginning to regain their form, though concerns still linger regarding the future of their star player, LeBron James. Recently, James was absent for two games due to an “excused absence” and also missed the Lakers’ Saturday victory over the Sacramento Kings because of an illness. Despite sitting out, the Lakers hold a strong 18-13 record, placing them fifth in the Western Conference. However, the team clearly struggles without James, and head coach J.J. Redick is well aware of this.
Speaking to reporters following the Lakers’ 132-122 win over the Kings, Redick shared an update on LeBron’s status, offering some reassurance. According to Redick, James is not facing any serious health issues, just a mild illness. He noted that there was no real cause for concern, and that the star player could return to the court for the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on New Year’s Eve. Despite this minor setback, LeBron remains a key figure in the Lakers’ campaign for a third straight playoff appearance.
Even as he approaches his 40th birthday, James continues to impress in his 22nd NBA season. The game against the Kings marked only the third contest he has missed this season, with LeBron averaging 35 minutes per game. His stats remain strong, with an average of 23.5 points, nine assists, and nearly eight rebounds per game. Notably, he has already recorded eight triple-doubles this season, surpassing his total from the previous two years combined. This is in addition to the special moment of sharing the court with his son, Bronny, earlier this season, a milestone that fulfilled one of LeBron’s long-term goals.
However, the 2023-2024 season has also brought some challenges for James. His field goal percentage is the lowest it has been since the 2019-2020 season, and his points-per-game average is at its lowest since his rookie year in 2003. These signs may suggest that Father Time is catching up with the NBA legend. Yet, some believe that LeBron may still have one final push in him, as he continues his pursuit of a fifth championship, though the odds may be against him.
