Lando Norris’ Baku Nightmare: A Devastating Q1 Exit
Lando Norris was aiming to put the pressure on Max Verstappen in the Formula 1 title race, but his ambitions took a major hit when he failed to advance past Q1 in Baku.
Despite his struggles during practice, Norris was expected to compete fiercely for pole position at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. However, his qualifying session ended in disappointment as he was knocked out in Q1—marking the first time this season he hasn’t secured a top 10 grid spot.
Track evolution played a significant role, with drivers making substantial improvements during their final flying laps of Q1. Norris’ efforts were thwarted when Esteban Ocon briefly went off track, causing yellow flags to wave. Norris had to slow down to avoid a penalty, which ultimately cost him the chance to better his time. With his session cut short, Norris pulled into the pits, ending his qualifying prematurely.
Reflecting on his misfortune, Norris acknowledged the unlucky circumstances, saying, “Everyone did their second laps, and I didn’t, so it’s just unlucky. I had to lift for the yellow flags.” When asked about his prospects for the race, he remained hopeful, “I’m going to have to hope so. It’s a long race ahead, and we have some good tyres. I still believe the car is fast. My lap would have easily put me in second. It’s frustrating, but there’s nothing I can do now.”
This setback is a significant blow to Norris’ championship hopes. With a 62-point deficit to Verstappen and eight rounds remaining, including the Baku race, Norris faces an uphill battle in his quest for the title.
