Giants HC Brian Daboll on the Hot Seat Amid Daniel Jones Benching, NFL Insider Reports

The New York Giants are at a crossroads, and Head Coach Brian Daboll finds himself in the eye of the storm. After the controversial decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones on Monday, November 18, NFL insider Jordan Schultz has revealed that Daboll’s position is far from secure. According to Schultz, the next seven weeks may very well determine the coach’s future with the team.

“I would say that Joe [GM Joe Schoen] is probably safer right now than Brian Daboll. I think Brian, it’s been made clear to me, is coaching for his job over the last seven weeks with Tommy DeVito,” Schultz stated, underscoring the urgency surrounding Daboll’s situation.

For Daniel Jones, the benching may signify the end of his tenure with the Giants, despite signing a $160 million contract extension in 2023. His performance this season has been lackluster, throwing just eight touchdowns against seven interceptions. However, the financial implications of parting ways with Jones complicate matters for the Giants. With a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025 on the books, the team faces a tough decision regarding his future.

Daboll’s loyalty to Jones had been evident earlier in the season. Even during a dismal Week 7 loss to the Eagles, Daboll resisted calls to bench the struggling quarterback. But the dynamics have shifted dramatically, and the Giants are now turning to Tommy DeVito as their starting quarterback for the upcoming matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Addressing the change, Daboll explained the decision to go with DeVito, saying, “After evaluating a bunch of things and looking a lot of tape – and being around Tommy last year, where he created a little bit of a spark for us – that’s the reason we’re going with Tommy.”

The Giants also announced that Drew Lock will serve as DeVito’s backup. According to The New York Post, the move suggests the team is more focused on DeVito’s potential long-term contributions than Lock’s.

For Daboll, the remaining games of the season are critical. As speculation swirls about his job security, every decision and outcome will be scrutinized. The Giants’ future—and Daboll’s—hangs in the balance, making this a pivotal chapter in the team’s rocky season.
