Detroit Lions Announces Their Kevin Zeitler Replacement

The Detroit Lions had the best offensive line in the NFL last season, but with Kevin Zeitler joining the Tennessee Titans, they need a new starting right guard to maintain their strength. While they could turn to free agency or the 2025 NFL Draft, the solution is already on their roster—Christian Mahogany.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Lions selected Mahogany with their sixth-round compensatory pick. Despite being projected to go in the fourth round in most mock drafts, the Lions managed to grab him late, offering tremendous value. Mahogany was a three-year starter at Boston College, though he missed the 2022 season due to a torn ACL.

Mahogany’s physical playing style fits perfectly with the Lions’ aggressive offensive approach. He is known for his power and ability to drive defenders backward in the run game. While he had some issues with hand placement and footwork in college, his strength lies in his ability to push off the ball and dominate at the point of attack. Scouts have labeled him a “downhill mauler,” a term that accurately describes his ability to engage defenders and drive them several yards before finishing his blocks. The Lions value linemen who play with toughness, seek contact, and block through the whistle—all qualities that Mahogany consistently displays.

Beyond his physicality, Mahogany is an elite athlete for the guard position. His blend of power, explosiveness, and agility is rare and makes him an ideal fit for Detroit’s offensive system. The Lions often ask their linemen to pull across the line and block downfield, and Mahogany’s athleticism allows him to excel in these roles. His ability to reach the second and third levels of the defense enhances the Lions’ run-first offense, which relies on setting up play-action opportunities.

During his rookie season, Mahogany proved he could step up when needed. He started two games, first filling in at left guard for the injured Graham Glasgow. Despite not playing left guard since his freshman year, he performed admirably, making only a few minor mistakes. His second start came in the Divisional Playoff game against the Washington Commanders, replacing Zeitler. While the Lions suffered a tough loss, Mahogany stood out with a dominant performance in the run game, earning a 91.9 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus.

Mahogany is in an excellent position to succeed with the Lions. He benefits from working under offensive line coach Hank Fraley, who has a strong track record of developing young talent. With Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow and star right tackle Penei Sewell surrounding him, Mahogany has the support and environment to thrive. While the Lions face some concerns about interior line depth and Glasgow’s age, Mahogany is ready to step in and secure the right guard position for the future.
