With the trade deadline approaching, the Dallas Cowboys are making moves to strengthen their struggling backfield by eyeing a potential deal for a Super Bowl-winning running back.
This season has presented the Cowboys with numerous challenges, as they head into Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons holding a 3-4 record. While various issues affect their roster, the most pressing problem is in the running game. Currently, Dallas ranks last in the NFL for both rushing yards per game (74.1) and rushing touchdowns (3), managing only 3.4 yards per carry.
Despite their efforts, the running duo of Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle hasn’t provided the production Dallas needs. With the Nov. 5 trade deadline fast approaching, the team is in dire need of a backfield boost. One potential solution could be acquiring Clyde Edwards-Helaire in a hypothetical trade that would only require the Cowboys to give up a seventh-round draft pick to gain a running back with championship experience.
Edwards-Helaire brings versatility and could reignite Dallas’s offense. Although he spent part of the season on the NFI list dealing with PTSD, he’s now ready to contribute and could be the playmaker the Cowboys desperately need. At 25 years old, Edwards-Helaire has accumulated 1,845 rushing yards, 765 receiving yards, and scored 19 total touchdowns over his career. His experience as a two-time Super Bowl winner could inject a new level of confidence and capability into the Cowboys’ backfield at minimal cost.
Dallas’s reunion with Elliott hasn’t yielded the desired results, and Dalvin Cook has seen limited action this season, signaling that the team may lack confidence in his impact. Bringing in a player like Edwards-Helaire could be the spark the Cowboys need to turn their season around, potentially making a crucial difference in their playoff aspirations.
