JR Motorsports (JRM) made a notable entrance into the NASCAR Cup Series at the 2025 Daytona 500, marking a significant milestone for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his team. Debuting with the #40 car driven by Justin Allgaier, JRM impressed in their first Cup race. Despite starting 19th, Allgaier maneuvered through the race’s intense action to finish 9th, a strong result that sparked excitement about JRM’s future in the Cup Series. However, fans wondering if a full-time Cup entry is next might have to wait.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. addressed these expectations on his Dale Jr. Download podcast, where he spoke openly about the financial challenges of owning a Cup team. The high cost of securing a charter is a major roadblock. “I’m not going to give you $40 million for that Charter. I’m not doing that,” Junior stated, making it clear he isn’t willing to shoulder that kind of financial risk alone.

Still, Earnhardt Jr. has a vision for JRM’s Cup Series future. Inspired by Denny Hamlin’s partnership with Michael Jordan at 23XI Racing, Junior is considering a minority ownership path. “I would invest five or ten [million] in the right situation… 20% ownership is probably a very comfortable place for me,” he shared. This approach would allow Junior to contribute financially and leverage JRM’s successful history in NASCAR without bearing the full cost.
With four Xfinity Series championships under its belt, JRM is already a strong brand in the sport. Earnhardt Jr. highlighted that JRM’s established operations, along with the involvement of his sister Kelly Earnhardt, could attract potential investors. He’s optimistic about finding a majority partner, confident in the Earnhardt legacy’s value. “Every single partner that has left has come back and said y’all do it better,” he remarked.
While the path forward won’t be easy due to the high costs and NASCAR’s restrictive charter system, the potential for JRM to grow in the Cup Series is undeniable. With the right partnership and strategy, JRM could make the leap into full-time Cup competition, starting an exciting new chapter for one of NASCAR’s most iconic teams.
