With the NFL trade deadline fast approaching, talk around the Dallas Cowboys is growing as they face key challenges for their 2024 season. While many anticipate a potential trade to strengthen the roster, history shows that owner Jerry Jones is often reluctant to make major moves. This could mean that despite the speculation, the Cowboys might choose to stand pat and make no significant trades.
Still, if the Cowboys want to remain competitive, they must address the shortcomings in their defensive line. Currently, Dallas is averaging just 2.3 sacks per game, placing them 17th in the league. Additionally, their defense has struggled to stop the run, conceding 859 yards this season, ranking them 27th in this category. These weaknesses make their defense a prime area for improvement.
Cowboys’ Need for a Pass Rusher
Given these struggles, rumors linking the Cowboys to Dominique Robinson, a pass rusher from the Chicago Bears, are gaining attention. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, “The Bears are considering trade options for pass rusher Dominique Robinson, who may benefit from a fresh start with another team. Teams like the Cowboys, Cardinals, and Commanders are looking to add depth at pass rusher.”
Robinson was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 draft but has since fallen in the Bears’ depth chart after they brought in Montez Sweat. With a background as a former wide receiver from Miami (Ohio), Robinson is known for his athleticism and raw potential. However, he still needs development to reach his full potential as a pass rusher.
NFL.com’s scouting report describes Robinson as a “wideout turned quarterback hunter” with the physical tools to play as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense or a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme. Despite his inexperience, he’s shown flashes of promise, displaying speed and agility in penetrating the pocket.
Dallas’s pass-rush unit has been hampered by injuries. Star defensive end Micah Parsons is currently sidelined but is expected to return soon. While Chauncey Golston has been solid, veteran DeMarcus Lawrence, 32, is battling injuries and showing signs of slowing down. Additionally, rookie Marshawn Kneeland is out until November due to a knee injury, further thinning their options at defensive end.
Although Robinson offers long-term potential, the Cowboys may be more focused on finding immediate help to strengthen their defense. Therefore, it remains unclear whether Robinson would be the right fit for their current needs.
