The Dallas Cowboys’ playoff hopes may be slim for 2024, but the season isn’t without its silver linings. With a 3-6 record, Dallas will sit out during Week 11, watching as other teams battle for postseason spots. For the Cowboys, however, this season might end up being more about securing a favorable draft position than competing in the playoffs.
Despite the lack of playoff prospects, individual players have something to play for. The Cowboys have a host of free agents who could be auditioning for future roles, whether with a restructured Dallas coaching staff or on new teams outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Among those players is quarterback Trey Lance, who might soon get a shot to prove himself. Although he won’t start in Week 11, there’s speculation that he could see playing time later this season. According to Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, Lance is positioned to make an impact, as Gagnon highlighted him in a “5 Bold Predictions” article for the rest of the 2024 season. With Dak Prescott sidelined due to surgery, Lance has an opportunity to showcase his skills and possibly secure a substantial contract in the offseason.
Gagnon’s prediction for Lance stems from the Cowboys’ current quarterback situation. With Prescott out for the year and Cooper Rush struggling, Lance could get his chance to lead the team. Surrounded by offensive talent, the 24-year-old has a prime opportunity to turn heads just as his contract ends. While Gagnon isn’t necessarily forecasting a career revival for Lance, he suggests that the former No. 3 pick from the 2021 draft could draw interest from teams in need of a potential late-blooming quarterback.
At a minimum, Lance could position himself for a contract similar to the one Sam Darnold received—roughly $10 million for a one-year deal as a high-end backup. This type of deal could serve as an insurance policy for any team that needs a reliable backup option. If Lance performs well, he might even boost Dallas’ compensatory draft pick outlook for 2026, though this could also impact the Cowboys’ current draft position as they head into next season.
