Bubba Wallace, driver for 23XI Racing, recently shared his thoughts on retirement from NASCAR during an appearance on the Rubbin’ is Racing podcast. While he joked that a paycheck can make it tempting to keep racing, he emphasized that his passion for competition is what truly drives him.
At 31 years old, Wallace remains fully committed to his NASCAR career as he competes in his eighth full-time season in the Cup Series. Last September, he secured a multiyear contract extension with 23XI Racing, a team co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and NASCAR veteran Denny Hamlin.
When discussing his future in the sport, Wallace explained that his decision to retire would come down to his competitive edge. He believes that if he ever notices a decline in his performance, he would need to take an honest look at himself and consider stepping away.
“I think there comes a point where if your competitiveness starts to drop, you have to be realistic about it,” Wallace said. “You need to look in the mirror before the next season starts and ask yourself if it’s time to walk away. I’m not the type to just drive around for a paycheck—I want to stay competitive. When that opportunity is gone, I’ll know it’s time to stop.”

In addition to his focus on racing, Wallace has been candid about his mental health and personal growth. Ahead of the new season, he shared on social media that he has been working on self-improvement after struggling over the past two years.
“Last night of the offseason. Preseason work starts tomorrow, kicking it off with a fun trip to see the Columbia fam! Excited for this season to get underway. Took it upon myself to be better and do better. Got my ass kicked the last 2 seasons, plain and simple,” Wallace admitted.
He acknowledged that in the past, he had simply been getting by, but now he’s making a conscious effort to prioritize his well-being. This includes eating better, staying hydrated, and working out regularly. He also shared that his wife is skeptical about his long-term commitment to these changes, but he is determined to prove her wrong.
Encouraging others to start their own journeys, Wallace reminded fans that even dedicating 30 minutes a day to exercise can make a huge difference. Looking ahead to 2025, he is ready to push himself harder than ever, stating, “Time to roll up the sleeves, grab a glove, and get in the game!”
