“‘A Clown Show’: 3x Super Bowl Champion Criticizes Giants for Benching $160 Million QB Daniel Jones”

The New York Giants’ recent decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones has sparked intense reactions across the NFL. This move comes only months after the Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension in March 2023, a costly commitment that now raises questions. Jones has struggled over the last two seasons, with a 3-13 record as a starter, throwing just 10 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and failing to reach 3,000 passing yards. His performance has disappointed fans and analysts alike, and now it seems his role on the team is in serious jeopardy.

Three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth didn’t hold back his criticism of the Giants’ decision. He blasted the team for choosing to bench Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito while keeping Drew Lock on the sidelines. “This is why the Giants are struggling,” Schlereth commented. “Drew Lock has been their backup all season. He was supposed to be the go-to guy if Jones went down. But as soon as they decide to bench Jones, they turn to Tommy DeVito to stir up the fan base. It’s ridiculous. That’s not how a serious franchise should operate.”

Schlereth went further, suggesting that this type of decision-making could hurt the Giants’ future prospects. “If I’m a free agent, looking at the Giants compared to other teams, I’m staying away. They’re turning into a circus. Players work hard for a shot, like Lock did, and he gets ignored for a rookie in a last-ditch effort to excite fans. It’s a clown show.”

The Giants’ situation with Jones also holds financial implications. While Jones’ contract extends four years, only about half of it is guaranteed, giving the Giants some room to cut ties. They could release Jones in 2025 with a manageable $22.2 million cap hit, making it increasingly likely they’re preparing to part ways. Furthermore, by demoting him to a third-string role, the Giants seem to be safeguarding against a $23 million injury guarantee, which would be triggered if Jones were to suffer an injury that affects his physicals in the offseason.

With Jones possibly on his way out, the Giants may have to rethink their approach to the quarterback position entirely. This situation continues to evolve, and all eyes will be on New York as the team faces tough decisions regarding its future.
