The Chicago Bears are running out of patience with head coach Matt Eberflus, and for good reason. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, the highly anticipated first-overall pick who was supposed to be the future of the franchise, has struggled under Eberflus’ guidance. With fans growing restless, it’s clear that a new direction might be necessary to properly nurture Williams’ potential.
Currently sitting at a 4-5 record after three consecutive losses, the Bears’ offensive performance has been dismal. In their most recent matchups, Chicago managed only 15 points against the Commanders, nine against the Cardinals, and a mere three versus the Patriots.
Following these poor showings, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was let go, but Eberflus’ own job remains in jeopardy. Known for his defensive skills from his time with the Colts, Eberflus has yet to prove himself as the right leader for this offensively stunted Bears team. If they’re serious about getting the best out of Williams, they may need an offensive-minded replacement. Here are five coaches who could bring fresh energy and vision to Chicago.
#5 – Lincoln Riley, Head Coach, USC Trojans
No one knows Caleb Williams like Lincoln Riley, who coached him at both Oklahoma and USC. Riley, who built his reputation in college football as an offensive coordinator, would be a bold NFL hire, yet his familiarity with Williams and expertise in developing quarterbacks could bring an inspiring partnership. Though his lack of NFL experience might raise eyebrows, the Bears could take a page out of the Cowboys’ book when they hired Jimmy Johnson from Miami.
#4 – Kliff Kingsbury, Offensive Coordinator, Washington Commanders
As offensive coordinator for the Commanders, Kingsbury has turned rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels into a playmaker—a feat that hasn’t gone unnoticed in Chicago. Kingsbury, who previously worked with Williams at USC, has a proven track record of developing NFL quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes. After his rough exit as head coach of the Cardinals, he’d likely jump at a chance to redeem himself and guide Williams.
#3 – Eric Bieniemy, Offensive Coordinator, UCLA Bruins
Eric Bieniemy, currently at UCLA, would be an immediately available option if the Bears look for an in-season change. Known for helping shape Patrick Mahomes during his years with Kansas City, Bieniemy has the pedigree to lead an offense around a player of Williams’ caliber. However, Chicago might be wary, given that former coach Matt Nagy also came from the Andy Reid coaching tree.
#2 – Ben Johnson, Offensive Coordinator, Detroit Lions
Ben Johnson’s transformative work with the Lions’ offense and Jared Goff’s resurgence make him a top contender. Johnson has redefined Detroit’s culture, which could resonate in Chicago. If the Bears decide to let Eberflus finish the season, Johnson could be a great offseason target.
#1 – Bob Slowik, Offensive Coordinator, Houston Texans
Bob Slowik has quietly turned C.J. Stroud into an NFL powerhouse under rookie head coach DeMeco Ryans. Stroud, last year’s second-overall pick, has blossomed in Houston, showing exactly what an offensive-focused coach can do with young talent. Slowik would bring that same focus to Williams and make him the Bears’ offensive cornerstone.
