A recent trade proposal suggests that the Dallas Cowboys could acquire Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb. Despite Cowboys owner Jerry Jones being reluctant to acknowledge the team’s need for help at the running back position, many fans would likely be excited to see Chubb join their roster.
With the NFL trade deadline looming on November 5, 2024, Jeff Howe from The Athletic put forward a potential trade scenario where the Cowboys send a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick in 2025 to the Browns in exchange for Chubb. According to The Athletic, this trade could raise Dallas’s playoff chances slightly, from 23% to 26%. Although it wouldn’t turn the Cowboys into Super Bowl favorites, it would be a valuable roster upgrade.
In an article titled “Six NFL Trades We’d Like to See” published on October 23, 2024, Howe pointed out the Cowboys’ struggles with their running game. Dallas ranks last in rushing yards, touchdowns, and yards per attempt. Howe noted that part of the problem lies in their low number of attempts, where they rank 30th in the league. The lack of commitment to the run game has hurt the Cowboys in multiple games this season. Chubb, despite coming off a serious knee injury, possesses the kind of star power that Jones tends to value. If Chubb can return to form, he could potentially be a top-10 running back by the season’s end.
However, there are valid concerns for the Cowboys to consider before pursuing a trade for Chubb. The running back will be a free agent in 2025, and he carries a $6.2 million salary cap hit for the 2024 season. Additionally, Chubb has missed much of the last two seasons due to injury, including undergoing his second knee surgery. He has played only three games recently, recording 11 carries for 22 yards and a touchdown in Week 8. Acquiring a player with such recent injury history and who is nearing free agency presents a significant risk for Dallas.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has consistently maintained that the team is not planning any major mid-season moves. For now, Dallas seems prepared to rely on Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott, with Dalvin Cook possibly being another option. During the team’s bye week, Jones responded strongly to inquiries about the roster, stating that it’s not the media’s job to make him justify his decisions.
